Sleep Inertia
Ever wake up feeling foggy, slow, or a bit confused? That groggy feeling is called sleep inertia. It happens when your brain hasn’t fully woken up yet, even though your body is out of bed.

Sleep inertia usually lasts 5 to 30 minutes, but for some people it can last much longer – sometimes up to a couple of hours. During this time, you may struggle to concentrate, think clearly or feel fully alert.
What causes sleep inertia?
Sleep inertia often happens when you wake up suddenly during deep sleep. This is also known as slow‑wave sleep.
When you wake, part of your brain switches on straight away to handle basic functions like breathing and movement. However, the part of your brain that controls decision‑making, focus, and self‑control takes longer to catch up. This delay is what causes that heavy, sluggish feeling after waking.
Why naps can cause grogginess
Sleep inertia is common after napping because you may wake up halfway through a sleep cycle. This is why short naps work best. Limiting naps to around 20 minutes can help you avoid waking from deep sleep and feeling worse than before.
How to reduce sleep inertia
If you’re short on sleep, sleep inertia tends to be stronger and last longer. The best way to reduce it is to make sure you’re getting enough good‑quality sleep. Keeping regular bedtimes and wake‑up times helps your body clock stay in sync, making waking up easier.
Finally, good sleep habits really matter. Wind down before bed, limit caffeine and alcohol intake and create a calm, comfortable bedroom. These simple steps can make mornings feel clearer, calmer and much more manageable.
