‘Sleep Had Dominated Our Lives’ – A Family’s Journey to Rest

Mar 30, 2026

At The Sleep Charity, we often hear from families who feel they have reached breaking point. We recently worked with this family which highlights the life-changing impact that tailored sleep support can have.

When this family first reached out, they described life at an all-time low. Their daughter, who is autistic with ADHD and has a PDA profile (often referred to as AuDHD with PDA), was struggling profoundly with sleep. Bedtimes could take hours, and nights were frequently interrupted by distressing wake-ups.

Sleep deprivation had become the norm – not just for their daughter, but for the entire family. ‘Sleep had dominated our lives since my daughter’s birth,’ they shared.

Despite working with health professionals and trying countless products, strategies, and advice, nothing seemed to make a difference. The effects were far-reaching. Their daughter was extremely unhappy – experiencing high anxiety, frequent meltdowns, difficulties with eating, and rarely leaving the house.

The impact on the family was immense. Exhaustion and worry had taken their toll, with the parent describing their own mental health as ‘extremely poor,’ worsened by the relentless cycle of sleep deprivation and caring for a distressed child.

A Turning Point

After connecting with The Sleep Charity and receiving specialist support, things began to change.

Just one month on from their initial consultation, the difference has been remarkable.

Their daughter is now sleeping through the night three to four times a week and the few nights she does wake, it’s no more than twice and she settles quickly again – a significant and meaningful improvement for the whole family. Alongside better sleep, her anxiety has reduced, her mood has lifted, and she is eating more regularly. Meltdowns have decreased, and she is a much happier child.

‘Family life has drastically changed for the better,’ they said.

Why Specialist Support Matters

Sleep challenges in neurodivergent children can be complex and deeply impactful. This story highlights how personalised, evidence-based guidance can help families move from crisis to stability – and from exhaustion to hope.

For this family, sleep is no longer an all-consuming struggle. Instead, it’s becoming a foundation for better wellbeing – for their child and for themselves. ‘We are very grateful for the support we have received.’
